INCIDENT UPDATE

The Ventura County Fire Department and numerous other agencies remain on scene of the Mountain Fire Incident. Over 2,000 personnel have been assigned to the incident which is currently estimated at 20,630 acres with 60% containment. Several Evacuation Warnings and Orders remain in effect.

RE-ENTRY PROCESS FOR EVACUATED AREAS

The incident management team is working around the clock to ensure areas are safe for re-entry. Prior to allowing re-entry, each area is thoroughly reviewed by response personnel to ensure your safety. Often, this process can take time as damaged electrical and gas connections take considerable effort to secure. Please be prepared for areas heavily damaged by fire to take longer to inspect and secure.

As Evacuation Orders are downgraded to Evacuation Warnings, there is still an element of danger as fire crews may still mopping up hot spots and ensuring other hazards remain controlled. By downgrading an Evacuation Orders to an Evacuation Warning, this does not mean the situation is safe. There is still a chance that an Evacuation Order may be re-issued if dangerous conditions return.

As of Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, all Ventura County schools that were impacted by the Mountain Fire are operating normally.

Wildfires can cause damage to water systems that may trigger water quality impacts. Damage to wells, pipelines and equipment can cause water delivery systems to fail or lose pressure. This has the potential to compromise both a water purveyor’s ability to deliver water to its customers as well as ensure that adequate water quality standards are being met. The burning of residential structures also brings higher potential for certain compounds that may pose health risks (e.g. benzene and volatile organic compounds ) to leach into any compromised water system and contaminate the water. Some of these compounds cannot be removed by standard treatment methods such as boiling water.

As a precaution, The State Water Resources Control Board, Ventura County Environmental Health Division, and the water purveyors impacted by the Mountain Fire issued UNSAFE WATER ALERTS to affected customers. Local water purveyors are working diligently to restore full capacity, make repairs, flush systems, and test samples to ensure the water meets requirements set by the State Water Resources Control Board. However, potable water may not be readily available through the tap for several days or weeks for some areas. Details of the current status of applicable water quality alerts for each water purveyor are provided below.

There are many health and safety considerations after a wildfire. For a copy of local health orders pertaining to the Mountain Fire and resources on how to protect yourself and loved ones, please visit Ventura County Recovers.

We are grateful for the support, generosity, and offers of donations from our community. However, at this time, we are prioritizing life safety. The County will continue to partner with non-profit organizations to provide assistance to those impacted by the fire.
In the meantime, if you would like to make a monetary or in-kind donation for the Mountain Fire recovery, please contact your favorite local non-profit organization directly.
