When neighborhoods are impacted by wildfire, critical infrastructure can also be impacted. Water systems can lose power or sustain damage. There is also the potential for the chemical Benzene to post health risks if leached into the water system from materials burned in structures. Three water purveyors were impacted by the Mountain Fire and have issued unsafe water alerts to their customers. As areas are repopulated, potable water may not be readily available through the tap. All three companies are working diligently to restore full capacity, make repairs, flush systems and send samples to independent laboratories to ensure the water meets requirements set by the State Water Resources Control Board. As soon as lab results confirm the water is safe to drink, the unsafe water alerts will be lifted. This could take anywhere from several days to a week, depending on system needs and laboratory testing. Please see below for details for each water purveyor.
